Students to Receive HELB Loans Next Week
The Ministry of Education is set to release Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans for University and TVET students on Tuesday, November 7. This announcement comes amid ongoing strikes by university students protesting the delayed disbursement of these funds.
In a statement made on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu revealed that HELB had completed the processing of loans for first-year university students and TVETs under the new Higher Education Funding Model. Machogu stated, “The Higher Education Loans Board has finalized the processing of loans for First Year students in universities and TVETs under the New Higher Education Funding Model.”

He also informed successful applicants that the funds would be disbursed to their respective universities and student accounts starting on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Machogu urged students who had applied for loans through the Higher Education Financing Portal to double-check the accuracy of their bank details provided in the loan application.

This statement follows a series of protests by students from various institutions who have been demonstrating against the delays in fund disbursement. Notably, students at Machakos University clashed with police officers, leading to road blockages and the deployment of tear gas.
Similar incidents occurred in early October when Multimedia University students blocked Magadi Road, a primary entrance to Ongata Rongai Town in Kajiado County.
