Education CS Extends Deadline for Applying University Fund
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced on Wednesday that the deadline for applying for Higher Education Loans and scholarships has been extended by one month. Originally scheduled to end on September 7, the new deadline is now October 7. This extension is intended to accommodate the 112,468 students who have yet to apply for these scholarships and loans.
In a statement, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu disclosed that as of September 5, only 156,532 students had submitted applications for both University Fund scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans.
This number represents only 60% of the students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) based on their performance in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
The Cabinet Secretary encouraged all eligible students to formally apply for loans and scholarships through the higher education financing portal.
He assured Kenyans that no student would miss out on a university slot due to an inability to pay school fees. Applicants will be able to access the portal and make applications shortly after receiving their admission letters.
To be eligible for a scholarship or loan, an applicant must be a Kenyan citizen and a 2022 KCSE candidate. The deadline extension follows the Ministry of Education’s decision to remove the mandatory ID card requirement, allowing students without IDs to use their birth certificates when applying.
Applicants are required to have a valid email address, a registered phone number under their name, as well as their KCPE and KCSE index numbers from the respective examination years.

Additionally, prospective students must provide their College/University admission letter and, for those under secondary school sponsorship, a copy of the sponsorship letter. Applicants must also provide details about their parents and guardians, including a death certificate in cases where a parent has passed away.
Under the new government funding model, applicants fall into three categories. Vulnerable and extremely needy students receive 100% government funding through scholarships and loans.
Needy and less needy students are eligible for 93% government funding, with a 7% tuition cost to cover. Able students are required to fully fund their education without government subsidies.
