Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) plays an important role in shaping a child’s educational journey, creating a solid foundation for future learning.

In Kenya, responsibility for ECDE lies with county governments, and recent findings by the Education Committee of the Board of Governors have highlighted some important aspects of the sector.

ECDE Teacher Salary Scale

To begin with, it is essential to understand the scale of the ECDE sector in Kenya. Current data indicates that Kenyan counties employ over 44,000 ECDE teachers, who can be classified into three distinct groups:

– People with long-term employment or pensions

– People with 3-year contracts

– Untrained teachers

ECDE 2023 Salary Scale

On January 13, 2023, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) issued a clarification on the remuneration and benefits of ECDE teachers, responding to a request from the district administration.

The action is part of the third salary review cycle, which covers all public employees, including ECDE teachers, with results expected in June 2023.

Nairobi County, as the capital, offers the highest salaries among these counties, where certificate holders get Sh33,020, diploma holders get Sh36,220, and diploma holders earned Sh59,770.

Meanwhile, Kisumu District offers competitive remuneration with certificate holders earning Sh32,800, and diploma holders receiving Sh36,000.

It is important to note that the salaries of ECDE teachers in other counties in Kenya vary widely, with figures ranging from Sh9,420 to Sh38,380. It is important to note that the district government pays ECDE teachers higher than the minimum salary set by the government, based on the guidelines provided.

SRC denied reports that ECDE educators’ salaries were below the federally mandated minimum wage, saying these reports were based on these teachers’ base earnings, rather than gross salaries.
