EALA MP raises concerns after discrimination of Somali-Kenyan students in Tanzanian Border
Nairobi, Kenya (HOL) – A member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has expressed concern after several Kenyan students of Somali origin were denied entry into Tanzania from Kenya.
Abdikadir Aden accused Tanzanian immigration officials stationed at the Namanga border of discriminating against the students due to their Somali origin.
The Somali-Kenyans are student leaders who are travelling to Arusha, Tanzania, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the East African Students Union’s Executive officials (EASU).
“Kenyans of Somali Origin experience discrimination crossing the border at Namanga. Student leaders headed to Arusha for the EASU function excluded from their Colleagues and held for hours. Just because they are ethnic Somali,” he said.
According to the MP, who also served as Balambala member of parliament in Garissa County from 2013 to 2017, he was asked to stand aside for hours before being denied entry to Tanzania for no apparent reason in 2018.
He claimed that Tanzanian Migration officials went so far as to demand money from him before allowing him to continue his journey.
The MP stated that he would take up the issue with his EALA colleagues to address the issue once and for all in order to avoid a similar incident in the future.
“The incident reminds me sometimes back in 2018 when I was heading to Arusha; I was ordered to stand aside for hours and later denied entry to Tanzania with no apparent reason. The Tanzania immigration demanded Sh10,000 to allow me to proceed with the journey,” he explained, adding that it ended up taking the intervention of Kenyan immigration officials to allow him to continue his journey.
Nimo Abdikadir, a Kenyan, was sworn in as Vice President of the region’s university students’ union during the swearing-in ceremony.
The EALA MP who attended the function congratulated Abdikadir on her new role in the region.
