Despite Scholarships, Students Reject Teaching Courses in TTCs
Governor Mr. Nathif Jama expressed sadness at the residents’ refusal to sign up for teacher training programmes. This is in spite of his administration’s pledge to offer scholarships to learners enrolled in the programmes.
He emphasised that it was unfair to keep blaming the unwillingness of instructors from other areas to teach in locations like Hulugho or other isolated districts within the county.
He claimed that the problem was caused by the lack of enthusiasm among local kids in enrolling in teaching courses.
He noted that young people in the neighbourhood have not demonstrated a strong interest in enrolling in teaching courses.
The Governor questioned the number of local students who are currently enrolled in teacher preparation programmes.
He emphasised the efforts they had taken to engage with these children, including the implementation of affirmative action policies and sponsorships of local teacher preparation programmes.
He did, however, express disappointment that despite these efforts, no one was taking advantage of the opportunity.
We cannot keep blaming teachers from other regions for not going to schools in locations like Hulugho or other interior sections of the county since our young people have refused to engage in teaching courses, Jama added. “We have Garissa Teachers’ Training College here.

When the local community’s own members were not stepping forward to educate their children, he questioned the reasoning of criticising outsider teachers for turning down posts.
How many local students are currently enrolled in teacher preparation programmes? We have made numerous attempts to communicate with them, even introducing affirmative action and sponsoring teacher education programmes, but no one has accepted our invitation. Why are we criticising others for not wanting to teach here if our own do not want to teach our children? asked the Governor.
