The Office of the Data Protection Commission (ODPC) has announced the launch of a comprehensive data protection course for government employees and students as part of a significant endeavor to increase data protection awareness and compliance across multiple sectors.

The initiative aims to equip participants with fundamental knowledge about data protection policies and practices, thereby promoting the responsible management of data for both public and private purposes.

Civil servants will have the opportunity to enroll in a complimentary data protection course at the prestigious Kenya School of Government (KSG) under this innovative program.

The course is designed to equip civil servants with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect citizen data while performing their official duties. This initiative seeks to increase public trust and guarantee the responsible use of personal information by promoting a data protection culture.

The ODPC, in collaboration with Strathmore University, is also extending this educational opportunity to students and faculty of institutions. The partnership with Strathmore University seeks to cultivate a group of knowledgeable advocates for data protection principles in academic institutions and beyond.

The free data protection courses, which are scheduled to continue until the end of the year, have attracted considerable interest. Participation will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging eager students to grasp the opportunity to increase their knowledge in this crucial area.

This initiative was launched in Kisii County with a data protection awareness event conducted at a hotel in Kisii town. The event drew a diverse crowd, including civil servants from national and county administrations, parastatal representatives, journalists, and community leaders.

Participants thanked the event for the valuable insights gained and vowed to share their newfound knowledge with their peers and communities.

Grace Auma, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Kisii South, acknowledged the participants’ positive response and dedication during her closing remarks.

“I encourage the commission to organize additional sessions and expand the program’s reach to accommodate even more individuals,” Auma pleaded, adding that the participants’ enthusiastic support demonstrates the significance and relevance of data protection education in the modern digital era.

The establishment of the Office of the Data Protection Commission in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 2019 demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to upholding data privacy rights and promoting a secure digital environment.

This initiative not only aligns with the commission’s mandate, but also represents a proactive step toward establishing a knowledgeable workforce capable of upholding industry-wide data protection standards.

Initiatives such as these demonstrate the government’s dedication to promoting responsible data management practices and protecting the privacy of its citizens and institutions as the nation grapples with the commotion surrounding world coin data collection.
