Members of Parliament approved the admission of the first cohort of students, making the Kenya Open University a reality.

The government has been awarded authorization to establish the open university by the National Assembly Education Committee, which launches the admissions procedure for over 7,000 students.

Through e-learning, qualified applicants will have the chance to pursue their ideal vocations without the use of traditional classrooms.

The online university will remove obstacles to higher education for underrepresented groups, the Education Committee emphasised.

The decision to base postsecondary education primarily on information and technology represents a substantial shift in how learning will be conducted at that level.

By lowering the price of tuition, housing, transportation, and admittance for students who attend in-person classes, the institution hopes to make education more accessible.

In addition, the institution will provide access to people from all social backgrounds who work or live in rural areas, allowing them to pursue higher education.

A campus for the institution will be built in Machakos County’s Konza City. But every lesson will be learned online.

Depending on the type of course, the technical committee leading the institution’s establishment has estimated a starting fee range of between 10,400 and 10,900 shillings per module.

With four to six subjects per term, the institution intends to provide eight online degree and diploma programmes.

The cost per module for courses in bachelor’s programmes in data science, economics, and statistics, business and entrepreneurship, technology education, and cyber security and digital forensics is 10,400 shillings.

Paying 10,900 shillings per module will get you a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Science and Technology and Food Systems.

As part of its charter, the university will also be allowed to offer postgraduate diploma programmes in leadership and management, learning design, and technology. These programmes will be available in the first year for a fee of 130 000 shillings.

Additionally, students will have the chance to take courses in global citizenship, psychology, research, research methodology, philosophy, ethics, and social cohesion.

The creation of the Open University, according to Beatrice Inyangala, Permanent Secretary of Higher Education, is a part of a coordinated effort to complete previously put on hold projects. She also said that the Open University has been in the records since 2010. One of the stalled projects is it.

The institution aims to address the high expense of a university education and create possibilities for people who were unable to get admission in prior intakes, as the government has repeatedly emphasised.
