COTU to Hold Nationwide Protests Over Fuel Price Hike

The Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU) strongly criticized the government for recent increases in taxes affecting Kenyan workers. During a press conference held on Saturday, this independent organization called upon the government to reconsider and reduce some of the newly imposed taxes on workers.

Led by COTU Deputy Secretary General Benson Okwaro, the union accused the government of placing a heavy burden on Kenyan citizens by raising fuel prices and imposing higher taxes on workers. Okwaro emphasized that while Kenyan workers have not seen salary increases, the government continues to introduce taxes, leading to a higher cost of living.

COTU is demanding a 50% wage increase for all workers across the country to help them cope with the current economic conditions. Okwaro expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address this issue and urged for a general wage increase.

In an interview with our media team Okwaro stressed that their plea aims to protect Kenyan workers from excessive taxation imposed by the government. He warned that if the government doesn’t take steps to support workers, they might resort to industrial action, as Kenyan workers are struggling with the high cost of living.

This situation has arisen in the wake of a significant rise in fuel prices, which has led to widespread discontent among various stakeholders and politicians.

Furthermore, COTU clarified that their protests are not intended to create hostility with the government and denied any allegations of pursuing legal action against the government. They simply want the government to reduce taxation on Kenyan workers.

Ultimately, COTU is urging the government to take immediate action to prevent the country from slipping into an economic crisis.
