Compulsory and optional Subjects in Junior Secondary
Starting in January 2024, there will be modifications to Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), particularly in terms of the subjects offered to students.
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), responsible for curriculum implementation, has disclosed that President Ruto approved the PWPER’s recommendations on August 1, 2023, with immediate effect.
As per the report, students under the new CBC structure will encounter a reduction in the number of subjects starting from the first term of 2024. For Grades One through Three, the subjects will be streamlined from nine to seven.
Likewise, for Grades 4 to 6, the subjects will be reduced from 12 to 8, and for Grades 7 to 9, the subjects will decrease from 14 to 9. In junior and senior school, there will be a total of 7 subjects, while pre-primary education will maintain 5 subjects.
KICD has currently unveiled the revised number of subjects for Junior Schools (Grades 7 to 9), while the new subjects for other Grades will be announced when they become available, hopefully within this term.
