A segment of the clergy has called upon the government to ensure timely payment to teachers who administered last year’s national examinations. Teachers, in response, have issued warnings of potential boycotts of both marking and administering this year’s exams.

Neophitus Kong’ai, the Bishop of the Orthodox Church in Eldoret, Nandi County, and the northern Kenya Diocese, along with other members of the clergy, expressed their concern over the delayed payment of teachers.

Speaking at Holy Resurrection Church during the observance of the Orthodox Church’s new year calendar, Kongai emphasized that the government should allocate sufficient budgetary resources to prioritize examinations and prevent unnecessary crises.

Patrick Munuhe, Chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), revealed that it took an entire year for the government to compensate teachers who supervised the KCPE, KCSE, and KPSEA examinations in the previous year. Munuhe also noted that despite sending multiple letters to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), payments were significantly delayed.

Furthermore, Munuhe emphasized that teachers would only agree to serve as invigilators for the upcoming national examinations if they received clear instructions regarding compensation.

He disclosed that they had set a two-week deadline for KNEC to settle the outstanding debts and cautioned that teachers were prepared to take action, including the possibility of refusing to proctor the 2023 national examinations, if timely payment was not made.

KNUT has even threatened to occupy the KNEC office with examiners if the payments are not promptly resolved.
