Civil Servants to Lose Allowances as Govt Seeks to Lower Ballooning Public Wage Bill

Civil Servants to Lose Allowances

The administration of President William Ruto supported the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) recommendation to raise civil officials’ pay.

As part of its efforts to lower the soaring pay bill, SRC has come up with a new plan to slash allowances for public officers.

The sitting allowance, retreat allowance, and taskforce allowance were all described by the commission as double pay for public employees.

Following fresh proposals by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), Kenyan public employees may experience even greater pain from reduced monthly salaries.

According to SRC, basic salaries are doubled by the allowances.

The SRC recommended eliminating the taskforce allowance, retreat allowance, and sitting allowance for government employees.

The commission also suggested that the Daily Subsistence Allowance (Local and International Travel) for public officers be reviewed.

Salaries of public employees

In spite of the government’s efforts to reduce the escalating pay cost, if the modifications are accepted, federal officials’ salaries will be drastically reduced.

According to SRC, if the allowances are paid, the public officers will receive a double salary.

“Payment of retreat allowance, task force allowance, and sitting allowance in addition to basic salary amounts to double compensation,” the commission stated.

Paying taskforce allowances in a certain way

The commission advised accounting offers to seek the SRC’s guidance on payment for all additional taskforce allowances, stating that an officer should not be paid for more than one taskforce at the same time.

The compensation will be given to the public employee for a maximum of 15 days each month.

Full-time taskforce members have the option of receiving stipend payments or a monthly salary.

Depending on the job group, the SRC suggested paying local and travel allowances at regular rates of between KSh 4,200 and KSh 18,200.

Ruto recommends raising the Salaries of civil servants

The adjustments were made at the same time as President William Ruto’s administration supported the commission’s recommendations to raise federal officials’ compensation.

Ruto declared that the SRC’s request to raise the monthly dues for the lower cadre of civil officials had been approved by the government.

The president of state gave SRC instructions to teach his administration global best practises for compensation.

“This is because all of us who work for the people of Kenya need to close the gap between us. The gap between those who paid the least and those who paid the most must be kept to a minimum, added Ruto.
