After betting firm SportPesa resumed its work 3 months ago its mid-week jackpot has crowned one gambler a millionaire after he has worn sh 12,444,454. The 45-year-old Mutuku Muoka who hails from Embakasi, Nairobi deals in car spare parts and he could not believe himself after receiving the call from the betting firm.
Mutuku recounted that it was impossible for him to sleep after he got the message in the middle from the Sportpesa customer care revealing to him that he had won the mid-week jackpot after predicting the 13 games correctly.
The Chelsea fan locally supports 18 times Kenya premier league champions Gor Mahia but admitted to having been a follower of Tusker FC.
He is not the first millionaire though to be named after a while back in May 2017 Samuel Abisai walked away with a whopping 221 million on Sportpesa’s mega jackpot. There have also been more winners in between the time as the gambling fraternity was being popularized among Kenyans.
The betting firm in Kenya did not have it easy as the government was cracking down on them with interior cabinet cs Fred Matiangi leading. Some of them were found culpable of tax evasion and also faced charges. Such companies like Sportpesa were affected by the move which made them close shop coming as a blow to many of their customers.
However, there has been a rise of other betting firms after the closure of others.
Matiangi said that the firms were robbing Kenyans especially the youth of their hard-earned income and that also it had rendered some jobless after spending their incomes in betting. He also stated that others had become lazy due to their reliance on gambling.
The firms though have been involved in supporting Kenyan leagues and even the sports fraternity wholly by going ahead to sponsor even local teams.
