Parents have complained of a corrupt scheme by school heads to defraud them by forcing them to buy school items from pre-selected suppliers and directing them to pay the money to the schools so that the schools procure the same for the children at prices that are twice the market price.
Leaders have also come out to condemn the situation terming the move as illegal adding that parents should be allowed to purchase the items from outlets that offer competitive pricing without being coerced into purchasing from a specific supplier.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi asked the government to prepare well in advance for the expected double intake in schools in 2023 and 2024. The 2022 presidential candidate said CBC is becoming expensive as some Grade One items goes for up to Ksh.10,000.
Mudavadi said the introduction of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) currently being rolled out and the educational calendar disruption by covid19 has greatly affected the education system.
Following the anticipated double intake of learners that will be transitioning to secondary schools in January 2023, the leader warned that if proper planning is not done the system may crash.
The issue of some Form one student names missing from the list of schools they were invited to join and others being invited to day-schools that are far from where they lived also emerged with Mudavadi saying Education Ministry should issue an audit for the explanation.
The ministry of education has directed school principles to admit all students who sat for the 2020 kcpe examination including those who may not have full school fees.
Heads of schools who have not uploaded their candidates’ registration details onto the Kenya national examinations council (KNEC) registration portal as required have been instructed to do so or else they will be held liable for failure to register any candidate.
