The graphic sexual education material present in Grade 7 textbooks has drawn the stern displeasure of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).

Such teaching materials may unintentionally encourage students to take contraceptives, according to a statement made by KCCB Chairman Paul Njiru at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

The priests fear that teaching young students about family planning and contraception use will inevitably result in the sexualization of the classroom. Due to this, the already high rates of teenage pregnancies and abortions are anticipated to increase dramatically.

Bishop Paul Kariuki stressed during a media briefing that the material not only sexualizes the school environment for children but also serves as a key contributor to the worrying numbers of adolescent pregnancies and abortions.

Kariuki pointed out that the Ministry of Education’s strong prohibition against exposing children to sexual material is violated by this content.

The KCCB expressed worry that, if left unchecked, the primary education level’s promotion of family planning would lead to an increase in teenage abortions.

The church in response asked Catholic school heads to keep stressing and fostering strong moral principles in their students.
