Bad News to these Principal As TSC Gives them a Rude Shock

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has declined to promote teachers, leaving around 1,500 principals who had applied for promotions, gone through interviews, and anxiously awaited promotion letters disappointed this week. Instead of announcing promotions, TSC delivered regretful news to these educators.

It remains unclear why the Commission withdrew their promotions, especially since they had been approved and selected following district interviews.

Many drama teachers who had hoped for acceptance were left disillusioned by the decision. TSC has advised these teachers to reapply for their positions once promotions are announced. Interestingly, the Ministry of Education is now responsible for teacher promotions, based on the advice of the Education Task Force. Whether TSC will address this issue of teacher promotions in the future is uncertain.

In a concerning statistic, TSC data indicates that a staggering 3,359 public schools currently lack a principal. Among these, 1,441 secondary schools and 1,918 public elementary schools find themselves without a leader. This situation is a consequence of government-initiated changes to the school system.

Initially, TSC advertised 14,738 promotion opportunities in December 2022, only to later retract these positions. Delays in promotions also occurred in January, March, and May due to insufficient registered teachers. TSC executives attribute the unfulfilled advertised positions in some districts to teachers themselves.

According to TSC’s chief, the Commission had issued notifications earlier in the year for 14,738 promotion opportunities to address vacancies left by departing teachers. However, only 11,231 teachers were appointed, with 3,507 positions remaining unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. This left only 1,021 positions open for active teachers to vie for.

The promotion vacancies covered various roles in general and special schools, including principals, vice principals, masters, principals, and senior teachers. Nevertheless, TSC has persistently refused to promote teachers.
