Kenya boasts a rich educational landscape with over twenty public universities, including renowned institutions like Kenyatta, Nairobi, Maseno, Egerton, and Masinde Muliro, all offering a diverse array of courses to eager students.

Additionally, the country is home to several private universities such as Mt Kenya, Kabarak, and Daystar, among others, providing similar educational opportunities.

However, concerning news has recently come to light regarding public universities. Reports indicate a significant decline in student enrollment at these institutions, with a notable shift towards private universities.

According to a credible source in the Daily Nation newspaper, dated Monday, September 25th, 2023, this trend has been triggered by the perception that public universities have become prohibitively expensive. This perception stems from the government’s decision, facilitated by the Ministry of Education, to implement a new university funding model.

Of particular concern is the impact of the loan component within this model, which is believed to have exacerbated the financial burden on students. Consequently, many are now opting for private universities, which are viewed as more cost-effective alternatives.

In conclusion, these developments signal positive prospects for private universities. They are poised to experience a surge in student admissions, reversing the trend of lower enrollment numbers that has persisted since 2016.

This shift underscores the changing dynamics within Kenya’s higher education landscape, with affordability becoming a pivotal factor influencing students’ choices.
