Bad News To Parents And Students Over Triple Varsity Fees

In light of the growing momentum behind the proposal to triple the present university price, parents and students have good reason to be concerned.

According to a story in today’s People Daily, the government and vice chancellors of public universities are considering raising tuition by at least three times what it already is in an effort to stabilise the finances of the institutions that are finding it difficult to provide services.

If the plans put forth by the government and VCs are implemented, university students’ existing fee of Sh16 000 per semester will increase to Sh48 000 as of the middle of this year.

It has been made known that on January 16th, a conference was conducted in Jogoo House with senior managers from all public universities and top Ministry of Education officials, when the idea to treble the charge gathered traction.

In contrast to the current economy and the value of the shillings, VCs contended that the current university fee was drafted many years ago during a different economic environment.

“Students should pay reasonable tuition costs. Therefore, evaluate the Sh16,000 in tuition that has been owed since 1992,” the vice-chancellors’ resolution states.

Given that some students are now having difficulty paying the current cost, the likelihood that the majority of university students will drop out of school increases if the fee is raised. The majority of students rely on HELB loans, which are insufficient to cover their expenses.
