Bad News to Education CS Machogu Over New University Funding Model

The Kenyan government, led by President William Ruto, introduced a new university funding model in May of this year for students entering higher education institutions. Under this model, students are categorized into four groups: the vulnerable, extremely needy, the needy, and less needy, who would be eligible for loans and sponsorship from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

However, concerning news has emerged regarding the Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, as it’s been revealed that a lobby group has petitioned the decision in court. According to a report in the Daily Nation newspaper dated today, Tuesday, October 24th, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has filed a case in the High Court, seeking to halt the implementation of the new university funding model on the grounds that it’s too costly.

In summary, this legal challenge by the lobby group comes in the wake of recent parliamentary efforts to halt the program, indicating significant concerns and debates surrounding the new university funding model in Kenya.
