Bachelor’s Degree in Law Grade Lowered By National Assembly

The Budget and Appropriations Committee of the National Assembly has granted its approval for the advancement of the Legal Education (Amendment) Bill 2023. This bill, spearheaded by Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino, aims to reduce the prerequisites for Law Degrees within the country.

The proposed amendments by MP Babu Owino intend to eliminate the inflexibility present in the current legislation, which demands higher grades for students enrolling in a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree program.

In these suggested changes, Babu Owino seeks to remove the requirement for a grade of B plain in English or Kiswahili, enabling more students to enroll in the course.

This modification is expected to allow LLB graduates without a B plain in English or Kiswahili to gain admission to the Kenya School of Law for the advocates’ training program, thereby facilitating career advancement.

Babu Owino emphasized that a small alteration in the Legal Education Act of 2010 could enhance accessibility to legal education and the practice of law for Kenyans.

Currently, the prerequisites for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in Kenya vary across institutions. Nonetheless, the general prerequisites usually include a mean grade of C+ (Plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.

Additionally, students seeking enrollment must have attained at least a B (Plain) in English or Kiswahili in their KCSE, or possess at least three Principal Passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education Examination (KACE).

It is also an option for students to commence their legal studies at the Diploma level and later advance to a Degree program upon achieving a credit pass in their examination from an accredited institution.

Furthermore, some institutions may require applicants to take the Law Admission Test (LAT), particularly those entering from the diploma level. The LAT is a standardized test used to evaluate the academic aptitude of individuals applying to law school, administered by the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the regulatory body for legal education in Kenya.

The CLE is responsible for setting and periodically reviewing the minimum academic requirements for law school admission, which may be subject to updates over time.
