Arsenal Ready to Splash £48 Million on “Game-Changing” Winger!
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to trigger the release clause of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams in the upcoming transfer window. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the London club has identified Williams as a key target to strengthen their wide attacking options and is willing to pay his £48 million release clause.
The Gunners are set to invest heavily in the squad this summer, with a versatile winger being a top priority. Having been on Arsenal’s radar for over a year, Williams is seen as the ideal candidate to reinforce their attack. Fenerbahce head coach Jose Mourinho has previously described him as a “fantastic” talent.
The 22-year-old had an outstanding 2023/24 season with Bilbao, scoring eight goals and providing 16 assists across 39 appearances. His contributions were instrumental in securing the Copa Del Rey title for his club. Furthermore, he impressed on the international stage at the European Championship, netting a crucial goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory over Everton in the final.
Despite being linked with a move last summer, Williams ultimately chose to remain at Bilbao. However, a transfer now appears more likely. This season, injuries have hampered his form, limiting him to just 13 goal contributions. Nevertheless, this is not expected to deter potential suitors.
Arsenal remain keen on acquiring Williams and may pursue an early agreement in the transfer window. Though he has primarily featured on the left wing over the past 18 months, he is equally adept on the right flank. Manager Mikel Arteta is likely to view him as a flexible attacking option who can provide cover in multiple positions.

Arsenal’s advantage in securing Williams has grown as Barcelona’s interest has waned in recent months. Given the strong form of Raphinha and emerging star Lamine Yamal, the Spanish club may struggle to guarantee Williams a starting role. In contrast, he could have a greater chance of securing a place over Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on Arsenal’s left wing.
Arsenal’s spending in La Liga may not stop with Williams. The club is also reportedly considering moves for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, reinforcing multiple areas of the squad ahead of the new season.
