Arsenal Poised to Overtake Liverpool in Transfer Race, While Manchester United Contemplates $111m Gamble

Arsenal could seize the lead in the transfer race for one target, while Manchester United has reportedly agreed to terms with a third player.

Today, Liverpool’s preseason preparations stepped up a notch, although much of the attention was focused on a player who did not feature in the first preseason friendly.

The Reds returned to action for the first time since the conclusion of their disappointing 2022/23 season in May when they faced German side Karlsruher earlier today, although Jordan Henderson sat out the match.

Saudi Arabia has shown interest in the Liverpool captain over the past week, with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq seeking a contract (according to the ECHO). His absence in Germany may provide insight into his future.

Fabinho was left out of the touring squad after Al-Ittihad made him a $52 million (£40 million/€46 million) offer (as reported by the Guardian). Henderson could very well follow Fabinho to the Middle East.

And while Liverpool could be losing two of its most experienced midfielders, its rivals appear to be increasing their transfer activity.

Here, Liverpool.com takes a peek at what’s happening at the other major clubs in the Premier League and Europe.

Arsenal could surpass Liverpool in pursuit of Roméo Lavia.

According to the Belgian publication DH, Arsenal may soon surpass Liverpool in the pursuit of Roméo Lavia.

This summer, Lavia has been linked to both clubs, as well as Chelsea. With Chelsea attempting to seal a deal for Moisés Caicedo, the contest could be left to Liverpool and Arsenal, with Saudi Arabia deciding the victor.

The Reds are in the market for a defensive midfielder, as both Fabinho and Henderson appear likely to depart. However, the Gunners could also be in the market, as Thomas Partey is being courted by clubs from the Gulf state as well as Juventus (according to football.london). Mikel Arteta has made Lavia his ‘priority’ if Partey leaves.

Lavia appears to be the obvious choice for Liverpool if Fabinho and Henderson leave, as it appears probable they will. However, the Reds will need an imminent starter this season, while the Southampton midfielder represents a long-term option. Liverpool’s need for a more seasoned player will not alter regardless of whether it beats another club to the 19-year-old’s signature.

Rasmus Hjlund ‘agrees to terms’ with Manchester United.

The Athletic reports that Manchester United has agreed personal terms with Atalanta striker Rasmus Hjlund, but a contract is still a long way off.

The Daily Mail previously reported that Atalanta valued Hjlund at $111 million (£86 million/€99 million), but Manchester United believes a fee of $84 million (£65 million/€75 million) will suffice. Erik ten Hag’s squad may also encounter Financial Fair Play issues, as Mason Mount has been signed and André Onana is anticipated to follow.

Manchester United has a history of turning player transfers into sagas and overpaying for players, according to Liverpool.com. Hjlund appears to be identical on both criteria.

With 10 goals in 34 Serie A appearances last season, the 20-year-old does not appear to be able to provide Man United with a proven goalscorer, and he is surely not worth $111 million. It would be a tremendous risk, but one that could allow Liverpool to pass its rival again next season.
