Arsenal Expresses Strong Interest in Acquiring Ex-Bayern Munich Star

The former Bayern Munich defender could become Arsenal’s newest player.

Manchester City loaned Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich for the second half of the season, but as the season drew to a close, it became increasingly obvious that Bayern had no intention of purchasing him permanently from City.

Before the winter transfer window, the Portuguese defender had a well-publicized disagreement with Pep Guardiola, which contributed to his desire to be loaned out for the remainder of the season. Obviously, he lost out on City’s treble-winning success, but he was a welcome addition to Bayern’s depth chart for the Bundesliga title race.

For a permanent acquisition of Cancelo, Bayern would have had to pay City approximately 70 million euros, a fee they were unwilling to pay despite the fact that Benjamin Pavard is a leading candidate for sale this summer. Ironically, Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in City’s Kyle Walker, but nothing is concrete at this time because the club’s primary priority has been finalizing a deal for SSC Napoli’s Kim Min-jae since Lucas Hernandez is joining Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Georg Holzner of kicker, Arsenal is interested in acquiring Manchester City’s Cancelo this summer. The right-sided Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff view the Portuguese international as a viable option for one of their wide back positions. Ben White played right back for the majority of the season, despite being a center back by profession. Takehiro Tomiyasu, who underwent knee surgery, is not anticipated to return from injury until the beginning of September, according to the right-back depth chart. Arteta requires an experienced player at that position, and Cancelo perfectly suits the bill.

Arsenal also have RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs and Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey on their shortlist of potential summer transfers if the Cancelo deal falls through. Tuchel wanted to acquire both a striker and a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window, so Arsenal is close to completing the signing of Declan Rice from West Ham United. No midfielders or forwards have been inked due to market fluctuations; only Konrad Laimer, Raphael Guerreiro, and (soon) Min-jae have been acquired.
