All TTCs to be Enjoined as One under Kenya Teachers Training College
If recommendations made by a taskforce on education reforms are accepted, teacher training colleges will be incorporated into a single organisation, similar to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) model.
The institutions would function as one college, much like KMTC, according to the proposal made by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER).
This implies that Kenya Teacher Training College will establish campuses at each of the 34 teacher training institutions.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education’s Basic Education Department will transfer its teacher training programme to the Higher Education Department.
Reworking the admission standards now employed for teacher training is one of the significant adjustments that will be made to make training more accessible to more students.
Since the government implemented amendments in 2021 requiring students to have a minimum mean grade of C (plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), enrollment in all TTCs is currently below capacity.
The subject clustering utilised to select applicants for the diploma in primary teacher education will also be eliminated by the proposed amendments.
At the moment, students must earn a C or better in each of the cluster courses, as well as in English, Kiswahili, mathematics, a humanities, and a science course.
However, candidates have found it to be a difficult mix.
3,922 students are now registered in TTCs, which have a capacity of 26,650.
Affirmative action in student admission to TTCs from underprivileged regions has also been suggested by the PWPER.
In an effort to increase the number of students in the regions, such pupils will be admitted with reduced admission standards.
Due of security concerns, the impacted areas are understaffed and undesirable to many teachers.
Students will be placed through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service for both the KMTC and teacher training.
