All Teachers To Start 1 Year Mandatory CBC Training In April 2024
To keep up with the changes in Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), all teachers who have registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) must retake a refresher course.
Starting in April 2024, there will be a one-year mandatory training programme in schools. However, it is still unclear who would pay for the training—the government or the teachers.
This is one of the suggestions in a draught report by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) that was delivered to President William Ruto yesterday at the State House.
The Education Reforms Taskforce’s proposals have already been put into immediate effect by Ruto.
The taskforce stated that it was crucial to retrain instructors on the curricular modifications. A year is anticipated for the training.
“The Ministry of Education to develop guidelines on how all teachers who graduated before 2023 undergo a mandatory one-year retooling and upgrading programme for compliance with the curriculum change,” read one portion of the recommendation.
Professor Raphael Munavu, who headed the force, instructed the institution to create extensive Faculty Staff programmes as a precursor to competency-based teacher training in order to achieve the retooling process.
The task committee additionally suggested C (plain) as the minimum grade for applicants to pre-service teacher education in an effort to increase both the quantity and quality of instructors entering the field.
For example, a person must have received a C (Plain) on their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam or the SS equivalent to be eligible for the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education.
The Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, the Diploma in Special Needs Education, and the Diploma in Technical Teacher Education are further pre-service courses that demand a C (plain).

Create Kenya Teacher Training College (KeTTC) to oversee all pre-service teacher training institutions (TTCs) as campuses. Develop a structure to ensure the best use and distribution of resources, were added to the list of suggestions.
“MoE to create the Kenya School of Teacher and Education Management (KeSTEM) as a corporate organisation to coordinate all In-service programmes for institutional directors and education executives. KeSTEM will also provide CPD for teachers using the resources provided by Kenya Teacher Training Colleges (KeTTC).
However, the University Senates shall continue to set the admission standards for the Bachelor of Education degree programmes.
The Teachers Service Commission, on the other hand, will give all education graduates the chance to participate in a required one-year internship programme after Pre-service training is finished.
Since CBC’s introduction during the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, it has had numerous difficulties, including a lack of instructors for the Junior Secondary (JS) sector and a subpar compensation structure. JS teachers didn’t get paid until June after going without pay since January.
Nearly 60,000 eligible primary school teachers had not yet applied for a position teaching junior secondary, according to press reports from the end of July 2023.
8,000 of the 30,000 instructors TSC hired were from primary schools.
