All Students to Attend NYS Training Before Admission to University
If President William Ruto’s administration embraces the proposals of the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms, there may soon be a resurgence of mandatory community service training akin to the 1980s National Youth Service (NYS) program.
The team, led by Prof. Raphael Munavu, put forth this recommendation in a study released on Tuesday, August 1. Under this proposal, all students graduating from secondary school would be obliged to complete a three-month community service training program.
Additionally, to enter the job market after college graduation, all Kenyan citizens would need to undergo identical nine-month training.
Therefore, it is imperative to reintroduce community service learning programs for post-graduation students. This initiative aims to foster peaceful coexistence, instill patriotism, promote cultural understanding, and cultivate a strong work ethic among our youth.
Training in community service will become a crucial prerequisite for accessing higher education and entering the workforce.
The committee recommended, in part of the report, that “a certificate of compliance to the community service be issued as proof before admission into the world of work.”
This group was established to devise a strategy for Kenya’s educational system, which includes the troubled implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
The report places significant emphasis on community service as a means of preparing students for future personal and professional responsibilities.
The research asserts that “community service learning” encourages students to develop a sense of civic responsibility to support and uplift their communities.
The Ministry of Education will be responsible for crafting a policy, even though the study does not specify when community learning would commence if implemented.
The report suggests that the Ministry of Education (“MoE”) should “develop and operationalize a policy for mandatory Community Service Learning Programs for all students upon completion of Senior School, TVET, and University education.”
These programs, designed to promote cross-cultural interaction and national cohesion, would be conducted in two segments: the first three months taking place after senior high school in one’s native County, and the second three months occurring after TVET/university studies in a different County.
