After Jurrien Timber, Arsenal could still attempt to acquire a £61m Premier League defender – journalist
According to reports, Arsenal is close to acquiring Ajax’s Jurrien Timber this summer, but the Gunners are still interested in Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
The North Londoners have been very impressive thus far in this transfer window. Just over two weeks into the transfer window, Mikel Arteta and Edu have already signed Kai Havertz, while Declan Rice and Timber are nearing conclusion of their deals.
Now, Dean Jones of GiveMeSport asserts that Arsenal is still contemplating a move to sign Cancelo.
Arsenal continues to monitor Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu play right back for Arsenal.
The Englishman was originally recruited as a central defender, but last season he was shifted to a wider position and was phenomenal.
Tomiyasu, White’s right-back backup, is an outstanding player; however, the Japan international has already missed 229 days of football due to injuries. He is recuperating from a knee injury and may not return until October.
According to De Telegraaf, Arsenal are close to signing Jurrien Timber for that position, and many believe he will be White’s deputy when the new season begins next month.
Jones, however, asserts that Arsenal has not yet forgotten about Joao Cancelo.
He stated, “Arsenal are still interested in Cancelo, but they have too much on their plate at the moment to pursue him.”
This is a significant week for Arsenal, with Rice and Jurrien Timber signing contracts.
Joao Cancelo spent the second half of the previous season with Bayern Munich, where he claimed the championship.
The German giants had the option to acquire the Portugal international on a permanent deal for £61.6 million (The Athletic), but they opted not to activate that clause.
Cancelo has returned to Manchester City and is highly likely to depart soon. If Timber arrives and Kieran Tierney stays, Arsenal will have no clear need for the 29-year-old, but Arteta may have a plan for him if the Gunners are still interested.
Even after acquiring Timber this summer, it will be intriguing to see if Arsenal will attempt to sign Cancelo.
