Adidas Issues Official Statement Regarding Mason Greenwood Amid Manchester United Return Speculations
The sportswear manufacturers have responded to rumors regarding a possible return to Manchester United for the suspended Greenwood.
Adidas, the manufacturer of Manchester United’s uniforms, says it has had no discussions with the club regarding Mason Greenwood’s return.
The United-suspended 21-year-old was reportedly approved for a possible return by the sportswear behemoth on Friday evening, according to reports from elsewhere.
On February 2, charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault against Greenwood were withdrawn. He has consistently denied the accusations.
Since January 2022, Greenwood has not played for United, and the club is presently conducting an internal investigation that has yet to be concluded. Adidas has labelled as “inaccurate” rumors that it has held discussions with United regarding a possible return for Greenwood, stating that it has no say in personnel or player decisions.
Adidas stated in a statement relayed by The Daily Star:
“After inaccurate and speculative reporting within the media it’s important for us to clarify that Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad.
“We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club.”
This comes four months after Nike, Greenwood’s erstwhile sponsor, clarified that it had not renewed its relationship with the player after he made changes to his Instagram account.
The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month that Atalanta were interested in taking Greenwood on loan for next season.
When pressed for an update on Greenwood during United’s tour of the United States, Erik ten Hag stated that he had discussed the situation with the board.
“It’s a club decision and of course, I shared my opinions but it’s a club decision and we all have to accept that,” he stated.
When asked if he wished to retain Greenwood, Ten Hag responded:
“I can’t say so much about it but I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what’s going to happen.”
