Achieving Soft, Manageable Natural Hair

Natural African hair can be difficult to care for, particularly when it is dry, brittle, and difficult to style. Maintaining soft hair requires both care and genetics.

We’ve listed a number of ways to keep your hair soft, but these are just suggestions; if you believe you have a more serious problem, you should see a trichologist.

Remember that hair care is an exercise in trial and error; some of these may not work for you, while others will.

Make use of a better shampoo.

Shampoo is equally important to hair care as conditioner. Choosing the proper shampoo for your hair, however, is essential to maintaining its softness and lack of frizz.

If your current shampoo is dehydrating your hair, you may need to switch brands.

Apply conditioner

Following the use of shampoo, a conditioner is provided. It restores hydration to your hair, particularly the strands, keeping your hair healthy and shiny. This is an essential step in the process of washing hair. If you skip this step, your hair may be dry.

Eat well

Our scalp and follicles, which are responsible for the growth and luster of our hair, require a healthy diet in order to function properly. Your hair may become dry and frizzy if you eat foods devoid of nutrients.

Use glycerin as a treatment

Glycerin is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. If your hair is particularly dry, you may want to apply glycerin to it, ensuring that every strand is coated, then cover it with a shower cap and leave it for a few hours. Your hair should feel less dry and appear fuller after a wash.

It is worth noting, however, that natural African hair thrives when left alone. Some protective hairstyles, such as braids and fake locks, are excellent alternatives for “vacationing” your hair.
