Academic Qualifications Recognized By TSC In Kenyan Schools

TSC Recognized Academic Qualifications In Schools

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) defines recognized qualifications as those that have been attained by individuals from all the accredited institutions and colleges and have been offered by the gov’t approved examination bodies.

For those individuals who have earned these qualifications from outside the country, its the responsibility of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the Commission for University Education (CUE) to give an equation of the certificate in accordance with the law.

The teachers service commission now recognizes the following minimum academic qualifications for those intending to enter into the teaching profession;

Qualifications for Those In Primary Schools

  • You must have attained a mean grade of C (plain) and above at KCSE level and must be in possession of the Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificate.
  • For individuals who are visually and hearing impaired entering into PTE must have attained a C- (minus) at KCSE level.

Qualifications for Those In Secondary Schools

  • One must have scored a minimum mean grade of C+ ( plus) at KCSE level with a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Education
  • Also those who have not gone for education but have done relevant Degree units and have gone for post graduate studies for a diploma in Education. They must have scored a mean grade of C+ (plus) and above at KCSE level.
  • One who attained a C plain at KCSE level with a diploma and Degree in Education is also eligible.
  • For those teachers with visual and hearing impairment are required to attain a C (plain) at KCSE and have scored a C (plain) in the two teaching subjects for those intending to teach in Secondary School.

Academic Qualifications for Technical Institutions

  • You must attain a mean Grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE with a diploma in relevant technical subjects. This follows that you must have studied a diploma or degree in Technical Education.
  • A relevant diploma in Technical Education with a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus), certificate, diploma and higher diplomas in relevant technical subjects.
  • Also you can have a C+ (plus) at KCSE and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Technology.

You should note that for those intending to teach in post primary institutions must attain a mean grade of C+ (plus) with a C+ in the two teaching subjects except for the visually and hearing impaired.

For those teachers who have a Special Needs Education (SNE) degree must have attained a C+ (plus) at KCSE and a C+ in the two teaching subjects for those intending to teach in post primary schools.
