A Teacher Has Been Arrested While Selling KCPE/KCSE Exams
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department have apprehended a 23-year-old teacher, Nicholas Ngumbao Kalewa, suspected of distributing leaked examination materials for national exams, both ongoing and future ones. Kalewa, employed as a Christian Religious Education (CRE) instructor at St. Lilian Academy in Gikambura Village, faced an investigation by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), leading to his arrest.
In a covert operation, detectives posed as students and infiltrated more than ten WhatsApp and Telegram groups he managed, infiltrating them with potential buyers of the illicit exam papers. Within these groups, Kalewa, also known as ‘Mr. Examiner,’ promoted the fraudulent exam papers, pricing them at Ksh1,500 per paper, while a full exam paper with a marking scheme was offered at Ksh2,000. He cautioned over 900 parents and students in the group not to introduce other matters, insisting he was busy dealing with those interested in purchasing.
Kalewa’s intentions were exposed when detectives, posing as unprepared students, engaged with him. He asserted his authenticity and discouraged members from considering other sellers, claiming to have a vast clientele. The investigation revealed that he had been using stolen identity cards to register multiple SIM cards and had established a bank account with a till-pay bill for payments related to the leaked exam materials.

Following this information, detectives launched a manhunt in Gikambura, Kiambu County, leading to Kalewa’s arrest and the seizure of several SIM cards. The Examination Council announced the establishment of a dedicated team and the implementation of measures to ensure the integrity of upcoming KIPSEA and KCSE exams, with the goal of reducing irregularities.
The Ministry of Education has introduced stringent exam guidelines, prohibiting teachers and students from entering exam rooms with handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and kiondos, and imposing severe penalties for individuals involved in exam cheating.
