A Push For Sex Education in Schools by Lawmakers

A group of lawmakers is calling on religious leaders and Kenyan citizens nationwide to endorse the inclusion of sex education as a formal subject within educational institutions. These parliamentarians made their case during a meeting held in Mombasa, which centered around discussions on the Family Reproductive Health and Assisted Reproductive Health bills.

Their argument revolves around the belief that this is the most effective way to enable adolescents to comprehend the potential risks associated with engaging in sexual activities.

Conversely, they contend that the introduction of Comprehensive Health Education as a core subject in schools will ensure that students acquire a comprehensive understanding of various sexual-related issues.

Should these proposals gain approval in parliament, it is anticipated that students would be better equipped to address the pressing challenges tied to high rates of pregnancy, sexual abuse, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Prominent Members of Parliament, including figures like Millie Odhiambo (Suba North MP), Martha Wangari (Gilgil MP), and Catherine Muma (nominated MP), have voiced their stance on the vital role of religious leaders.

They argue that religious leaders should play a prominent role in expressing views that aim to protect the youth and other minority groups, such as intersex individuals.

However, it’s important to note that a segment of religious leaders remains opposed to this initiative, fearing that introducing sex education in schools might expose young people to sexual content at an early age.

This debate has persisted, with Jane Njeri Maina, who represents the women of Kirinyaga in Parliament, having introduced a motion addressing this ongoing divide in sex education two months ago.
