A Huge Number Of Teachers Apply for 2023 Exam Marking

More Teachers Apply To Knec as Examiners

Many teachers have responded to an invitation from the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to participate in marking this year’s national exams. The invitation was made through a circular in October, which called upon primary and secondary school teachers trained as examiners to mark the KCPE and KCSE exams. The application process for examiners required them to apply online, with KCPE examiners applying from October 16, 2023, and KCSE examiners starting on November 1, 2023.

Teachers were instructed to use the link https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke and log in using their username and password. Those who had forgotten their passwords could reset them by providing their mobile numbers. Upon successful login, they were asked to complete their personal information and save it. They could then access, download, print, and read their invitation letters and marking instructions via the dashboard provided.

Knec will provide further details about the travel arrangements for examiners to various marking centers in Nairobi. The KCPE had 1,415,315 candidates, and the KPSEA assessments had 1,282,574 candidates. The exams began on October 30, 2023, and concluded on November 1, 2023.

The marking process involves manual marking for Insha and Composition papers, while multiple-choice questions (transcripts) are marked using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR), which electronically scores the papers. The OMR captures marked data from candidates’ answer sheets using specialized scanning.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated that the marking of KCPE and KPSEA exam papers would start immediately, with KCPE results expected before Christmas. He also mentioned that Grade 6 learners who sat for their KPSEA exams would receive their results around the same time as KCPE. However, priority would be given to the marking and release of KCPE results to allow for early preparations for the transition to Form 1 next year.

To ensure the efficient and timely marking of exam papers, Kipsang noted that there would be two shifts during the marking process. The government is committed to ensuring that the exam papers are marked and released within the set timeframe, and parents will be informed about the schools their children will be admitted to before the Christmas holidays.
