Teachers sleep inside school to demand 3-month salary arrears
The Board of Management (BoM) teachers at Marereni Secondary School in Kilifi County have been forced to sleep on the school premises to protest against the delay in receiving their salaries. There are a total of 17 teachers affected by this issue, and they have been camping at the school since Friday. Their demand is for the payment of three months’ worth of salary arrears. This situation also affects non-teaching staff.
The teachers resorted to this action after the school’s Principal, Mr. Amin Mohamed Karanja, informed them that the institution lacked the funds to pay their salaries. As a result, the teachers find themselves unable to cover their house rent, medical bills, and other essential expenses for their families due to these salary delays.
Mwasambu Pole, one of the teachers, expressed their frustration at having to teach without receiving their pay for several months. They received written communication from the school principal, indicating that payment would not occur until the next year, which prompted them to spend the night on the school grounds.

To make ends meet during this financial hardship, some teachers have taken up menial jobs, such as operating boda bodas and burning charcoal. They are urging the government to intervene and address this issue promptly, as the economic challenges in the country are making it increasingly difficult for parents to pay their salaries.
Annet Munga, another affected teacher, shared her struggles with rent arrears and the looming possibility of eviction from her residence. This situation has left them feeling as if they are left with no choice but to beg. Their attempt to communicate with the school principal was met with resistance, as journalists were denied access to the school compound. The principal himself spent the night in his office, as the teachers demanded payment before his departure.
