No Fees Increment For Schools- Machogu

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has assured parents that the Ministry does not intend to raise school fees for Form One learners who will be joining high school in 2024. Machogu conveyed this message during an event in Kikuyu on a Monday, where he oversaw the start of KCPE and KPSEA exams alongside President William Ruto. He emphasized that the fees for secondary schools will remain unchanged, ensuring no increment in school fees as students progress to Form One.

Machogu highlighted that presently, national secondary schools and extra county schools charge Sh53,000 per year, while county secondary school students will continue to pay Sh45,000 per annum. He reaffirmed that these fee structures will remain as they are. Additionally, the CS confirmed that there are sufficient placements available for Form One students in high schools across the country.

He also mentioned that as exams commenced, he had received confirmation that the examination papers had been distributed to all exam centers throughout the nation. The ongoing exams involve 1,282,574 Grade 6 learners taking the KPSEA exam, along with 1,415,315 candidates participating in the last KCPE exam. These examinations are scheduled to run for three days until Wednesday, November 1.

National Parents Association Chairman Silas Obuhatsa echoed the assurance of no fee increase, stating that the government had not engaged in any discussions about fee increments. He dismissed claims of new fee structures being issued by the government, characterizing them as media propaganda.

Obuhatsa emphasized that the fee structure in place before COVID-19 was provided when schools closed. He also mentioned that the Kilemi Mwiria taskforce had proposed affordable fees for parents.

Obuhatsa clarified that the government’s proposal for a fee increase, attributed to Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association Chairman Indimuli Kahi, had not been formally presented to the government. He explained that it was merely a suggestion put forward due to the challenging economic circumstances in the country.

Should the Ministry deem the proposal necessary, Obuhatsa emphasized that school management boards and parents would collaborate to determine the best course of action.
