The upcoming KCSE 2023 examinations will introduce several changes. The mode of collecting examinations from the containers, along with the grading system, will be modified. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has unveiled a new grading system for Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), set to be implemented in this year’s final KCSE examinations.

Under the new grading structure, only two subjects will determine the final grade for students. These subjects are Mathematics and one language, which can be either English or Kiswahili or sign language. Additionally, KNEC will consider the top five best-performed subjects by each student.

This new system is expected to result in a significant increase in the number of students joining universities, TVET institutions, and other educational establishments. In the past, KNEC relied on a grading system that considered a student’s performance in English, Mathematics, Kiswahili, two other sciences, and two other subjects.

This previous grading system was criticized for disadvantaging many learners, as reported by the Presidential Working Committee on Education Reforms.

The committee also noted that the previous system led to many students dropping out of school due to the emphasis on summative examinations for certification and placement. English and Kiswahili were used to measure literacy, while Mathematics assessed numeracy skills.

Form four students of this year will commence their final KCSE examination on October 23rd and conclude on November 24th, 2023. The Kenya National Examinations Council CEO, David Njengere, has announced changes in the examination issuance criteria.

Morning examinations will be picked up first, assessed, and then the second examinations will be collected in that order. Unlike in the past, where principals retained exams in their offices to be issued later according to the timetable, this practice is no longer applicable.

Another change for the 2023 KCSE examinations is the invigilation. In previous years, primary school teachers served as invigilators, but now secondary school teachers have been assigned these roles. This year’s KCSE examinations are set to be different from previous years due to these significant changes.
