In a report delivered to President Ruto by the Presidential Task Force on Education Reforms (PWPER), it is said that the Kenya Curriculum Development Institute (KICD) will be replaced by the School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU) in terms of publishing and distributing textbooks. enter a public school

As a result, KICD will concentrate on just two key responsibilities: developing lesson plans and evaluating manuscripts for book publishers. On the other hand, the procurement activities will fall under the purview of SEPU.

The PWPER report also advises restructuring SEPU and changing its name to the Schools’ Teaching and Learning Materials Centre (SLIMC) in order to more clearly express its expanding role.

According to PWPER, “(SLIMC) shall establish itself in the Education Constitution and broaden its purview to encompass the provision and distribution of teaching and learning resources; This responsibility should be entrusted to organised September.

The report also suggests that SLIMC, which is in charge of content development, provide publishers and creators of digital content with top-notch training. KICD currently fills this position.

Representatives from the Department of Basic Education, KICD, Kenya National Examinations Council, Kenya Teacher Training College, National Treasury, and Private Schools Association are among the members of the SLIMC.

At all educational levels, there have been conversations about raising financing for fundamental education per student. As a result, SLIMC has more influence over the spending plan for instructional resources, including books.

Pre-primary education costs 1,125 shillings, primary education costs 1,808 shillings, middle school costs 5,826 shillings, and high school costs 7,844 shillings, respectively.

Changes to the maximum amount of approved books that the government may distribute as school supplies are also suggested in the PWPER report.

Typically, KICD chooses one book for each subject based on the technical rating and cost.

Make sure that every public school has access to the top two KICD-evaluated textbooks, and improve KICD’s capacity to produce textbooks in regions where textbook companies do not.

To replace KICD’s procurement of textbooks, Ruto’s Education Reforms Taskforce established a new unit.
