Battle of champions as secondary school games begin in Kakamega
On August 8, 2023, the Kenya Secondary School baseball games will take place, with Kakamega County serving as the host.
The event will be held in Kakamega High School, Bukhungu Stadium, St. Ignatius, Mukumu Boys, St. Peter’s Seminary-Mukumu, Kakamega Approved School, and Masinde Muliro University, according to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA).
The five-day sporting event will pit schools from several counties against one another in a variety of sports, including hockey, football, volleyball, rugby, and handball.
Schools that are sponsoring the events will let out their students today in preparation for the start of the competition.
According to the organisers, every effort is being made to ensure that this year’s festival is a huge success.
The principal of St. Ignatius Mukumu Boys stated, “We will be releasing our boys on Monday morning to give the participating teams a conducive environment.”
As per the KSSSA’s mandate, schools will start to arrive in Kakamega and the surrounding areas on August 5-6, causing a flurry of activity.
According to Quinto Omusugu, general secretary of the KSSSA Western region, “We expect all the participating teams on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6 after which they will train in their various spaces and familiarise themselves with the local environment.”
The referees responsible for overseeing the various matches will practise from Saturday, May 5 until Monday, May 7.
The tournament’s major attraction is football, which is slated for some tantalising matches.
The Western area football champions Shanderema Secondary School, the North Eastern champions Bute Secondary School, Agoro Sare, and Kirangari Boys Secondary School are all in Pool A.
In pool B, St. Antony Boys Kitale, a six-time national champion, stands out among a group that also includes Dagoretti High School from Nairobi, Matiliku Boys High School from the Eastern District, and Serani Boys High School from the Coast.
In the Rugby 7’s, Western will be represented by four teams, including Koyonzo Boys, Vihiga High, Bungoma High, and Kimobo Secondary School.
Menegai High School, the Rift Valley winners, will be joined by the Trans Nzoia Bwake Boys, Garashi, and Shimba Hills, who will represent the coast. Kiambu High and Alliance Boys are located in the central area.
Kangaru School and Kitondo School are located in Eastern. While Nyanza will be represented by Saint Mary’s School Yala and former champions Maseno School, Nairobi will have Upperhill and Lenana School.
Kwathanze Girls Secondary School from Eastern, which has dominated the female volleyball competition, is in Pool A with Soweto Secondary from Nairobi and Vyambani Secondary from the Coast.
Kesogon from the Rift Valley, Karima Secondary from Central, Nyakach Girls from Nyanza, and Mwitoto Secondary from Western are the defending silver medalists in Pool B.
Pool A in boys volleyball has Vitengani from the Coast, Namwela Secondary from Western, and Tumaini Secondary from Eastern. Onjiko Boys, Ruthimitu Secondary, 2004 champion Tetu, and Andersen Secondary are the participants in Pool B.
The Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) games, which will be held in Rwanda, will reserve a spot for semifinalists. The tournament’s 20th iteration is slated to take place from August 17–27, 2023.
The governor of Kakamega County, Fernandes Barasa, thanked KSSSA for choosing the county to host this year’s school games and stated that the county is prepared to host the competition.
“Because it will encourage expansion, this event is crucial for the economy of our county. I thereby guarantee the organisers’ complete safety. I am sure the participants would like their time here because we are a tranquil and welcoming people,” he remarked.
