UoN Drops 145 Positions in University Ranking
In the most recent worldwide university rankings, which were revealed on Monday, June 12, the University of Nairobi (UoN) slipped 145 positions.
The university received a score of 77.81 and was ranked 924 internationally by UniRank, a well-known international directory of higher education. The institution has previously been ranked at 779.
However, the university took first place in the nation and was ranked ninth on the continent.
With a score of 66.92, Kenyatta University came in second among the best universities in Kenya. Among the top five institutions were Strathmore University, United States International University Africa (USIU), and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The top 10 list was completed by Egerton University, Mount Kenya University, Moi University, Technical University of Kenya, and Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
St. Paul’s University experienced the worst loss in the nation’s rankings, falling from third to 25th place.
With a 29.43, Riara University was ranked 38th. The institution received praise for providing courses and programmes that led to degrees in higher education that were officially recognised in a number of fields of study.
The ranking was based on the following criteria: offering at least three-year bachelor’s degrees or postgraduate master’s or doctoral degrees; being chartered, licenced, or accredited by the appropriate Kenyan higher education-related organisation; and primarily delivering courses in a traditional, non-distance education format.
“UniRank aims to provide a non-academic League Table of the top Kenyan Universities based on valid, unbiased, and non-influenceable web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves,” the statement said in part.
On May 15, 2023, UoN also slipped 20 spots to claim position 1,425 internationally in a rating conducted by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The universities were ranked by CWUR using four criteria: faculty, research rank, employability, and education. UoN’s poor employability ranking revealed that the majority of its graduates were having trouble adjusting to life after graduation.
The institution’s research centre, on the other hand, did well internationally and was ranked at number 1360.
A total of 20,531 colleges were polled by CWUR, and 47 universities from throughout the nation failed to make the top 2,000. UoN finished in second place in East Africa behind Makerere University in Uganda, which was placed 950 internationally.
