TSC Disturbed As 1,000 Promotion Posts Miss Applicants

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is now unable to fill the senior administrative positions that have been advertised since December of last year,2022, due to a lack of qualified applicants.

According to TSC report, “Teachers did not apply for advertised posts, leaving thousands of schools without principals and vice-principals. Public schools for students with special needs and disabilities are among those impacted. The commission has once more extended the deadline by seven days, from June 9 to June 15.

The commission claims that 1,001 open positions have gone unfilled since no applications with expressed interest in the last six months have been submitted.

The commission has been compelled to re-advertise these positions and extend deadlines numerous times, yet few applications have been received.

Positions for the following are among those that need to be filled:

  • chief principals
  •  principals
  • deputy principals
  • head teachers
  • deputy head teachers
  • senior masters
  •  senior teachers

According to the employer of teachers, there are currently 987 deputy headteacher positions in primary schools, 6 deputy principal positions in special needs schools and 8 positions in special needs schools that have not yet been filled.

The commission declared a total of 5,155 positions during the first round of ads, 2,592 of which remained unfilled.

The commission then issued another job announcement, but only 1,591 applications were submitted.

The commission reported that because many schools lack permanent administrators, it was hoped that extending the deadline would draw in more teachers.

TSC discovered that many are manned by teachers in temporary positions who are not compensated for their work.

Since teachers’ unions have charged the TSC with neglecting to promote teachers to grades that qualify them for administrative jobs, a lack of senior heads puts succession planning in schools at danger.

In response to this circumstance, the Commission has once more granted an additional seven days, from June 9 to June 15, 2023, to accept more applications.
