The TSC will no longer hire P1 teachers for the CBC. The Teachers Service Commission has told the truth and said that plans to get rid of the PTE certificate as the base requirement to become a teacher are well along.
After the “Framework on Entry Requirements in the Teaching Service” paper came out, this information was shared with the public.
The Teachers Service Commission has said that there are options to that. According to the commission, it will now be replaced by a diploma that follows the newly implemented competency-based curriculum (CBC).
The commission has recently tightened up on issues related to the teaching field. This is so that the commission can make sure that new teachers are qualified and smart enough to lead the education business.

For the CBC Plan, TSC stops hiring P1 teachers.
The commission has set the minimum requirements for all teachers working with children in grades 1 through 6. The commission says that in order to work with these children, a tutor must have a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE).
TSC currently sets a diploma in education as the minimum qualification for anyone who wants to teach at any level. The panel wants to improve the quality of schooling in the country.
The commission has also said that it will accept instructors’ post-training upgrade certificates if they have finished the ECDE, PTE, DTE, BED, DIP ED, and SNE training programmes properly.
After that, the teachers will be certified and able to teach children in grades 1-3 and 4-6, with a focus on foreign and native languages.
The TSC databank shows that a number of P1 teachers have signed up for further education at Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) all over the country. The above plans have crushed the hopes of thousands of P1 teachers who hoped to get hired by TSC without having to upgrade their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certifications.
During the next round of hiring teachers, the commission has said that it will give priority to P1 teachers who have gone to school and earned a diploma.
Since we are still making the switch to competency-based education, these teachers will get 10 more points than the other teachers to show that they have a CBC upgrade certificate.
A person who works inside TSC told us that TSC will stop hiring P1 teachers completely in 2024. People who haven’t updated yet will be able to do so now.
But many P1 teachers have complained that they can’t pay for their schooling because tuition, practise, and KNEC exam fees add up to more than 100,000 shillings.
