Mainoo’s Future in Doubt: Man United Scramble to Secure New Contract!

Manchester United are navigating a challenging 2024-25 season, prompting them to shift focus toward securing their long-term assets. One key priority is securing a new contract for Kobbie Mainoo, as discussions between the club and the 19-year-old midfielder have reportedly resumed, according to the Daily Mail.

Mainoo is pushing for a pay rise to £180,000-a-week plus bonuses as part of his contract renewal. While the club is keen on retaining him, they hope to reach a compromise and convince him that his long-term future remains at Old Trafford. He perceives the proposed salary as a fair reflection of his rising stature both at the club and in the England squad. However, earlier this year, he was reportedly dissatisfied with United’s initial offer.

Mainoo has firmly established himself as a vital player for United, with a defining moment arriving when he netted the FA Cup-winning goal against Manchester City last season. His contributions extend beyond club football, having played a significant role in England’s journey to the European Championship final.

Transfer Speculation and United’s Options

The midfielder, who signed his current contract in 2023—set to expire in 2027 with an option for an additional year—was at the center of transfer rumors in January. Chelsea reportedly expressed interest, with sources indicating that the London club holds him in high regard and has included him on a list of potential future targets.

Under manager Ruben Amorim, Mainoo has been utilized in a more advanced role instead of his usual deep-lying midfield position. Before a muscle injury sidelined him until April, he had been operating in the left No.10 role. Amorim, dealing with limited attacking options, currently relies on Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Alejandro Garnacho. The squad’s attacking depth suffered further in January following the loan departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony, alongside Amad Diallo’s recent training setback, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

While Mainoo is undoubtedly a key figure for United, committing to a £180,000-a-week salary at this stage may not be the most financially prudent move. Instead, the club should approach negotiations carefully, aiming for a more balanced offer closer to £120,000 per week. By doing so, they can secure his services while maintaining financial stability.
