For the fiscal year 2023–2024, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has suggested hiring 20,000 intern teachers.

CEO Nancy Macharia stated that hiring new employees will ensure that the goals specified in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda are accomplished in comments made on Monday to the National Assembly’s Committee on Education and Research.

The shortage in our public schools is expected to be alleviated by these teachers, but more significantly, she continued, they will guarantee that students receive a high-quality education.

According to her, simply hiring interns will have a variety of spiraling impacts.

“First, it will provide jobs for the large number of young people who are currently out of work. Second, raise living standards for many homes across the nation as well as the quality of education, she said.

The committee had invited Macharia for review of the revenue and expense projections for the 2023–24 fiscal year,

The commission is putting into place a comprehensive medical plan for teachers and their dependents, according to Macharia.

As part of the expansion of access to high-quality healthcare envisioned in the Manifesto, the medical plan currently provides coverage to more than one million people throughout the nation, she said.

Regarding teacher promotions, Macharia stated that the commission is dedicated to raising morale and job satisfaction, boosting loyalty, inspiring staff, and fostering professional development.

She regretted that many teachers had remained in one job group for a considerable amount of time, which had resulted in demotivation and low productivity.

“This state of affairs in turn affects the provision of quality education to learners,” she said.

According to Macharia, TSC needs Sh2.2 billion to implement the promotion of teachers into various job groups.

She added that Sh2.1 billion is needed by the commission to fund teacher professional development.

“Professional teacher development is a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning in the classroom due to the dynamic teaching environment,” she stated.

To enable educators (teachers, administrators, and supervisors) to acquire, widen, and deepen their knowledge, skills, and competences in order to effectively do their work, systems and policies connected to professional development are involved.
