Transfer Blow for Chelsea as Talks with Midfield Target Collapse
Sunday’s 2-0 victory over West London rival Fulham in Washington, D.C. gave Chelsea the inaugural Premier League Summer Series trophy.
Thiago Silva and Christopher Nkunku scored in the first half to give Mauricio Pochettino’s team the win in the final match of their summer tour of the United States.
Nkunku’s goal was his third in four games this summer.
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Pochettino used the match to offer playing time to a number of his players, making 11 substitutions at halftime.
Andrey Santos and Enzo Fernandez were the Blues’ two central midfielders in the first half, along with Carney Chukwuemeka and Conor Gallagher.
It now appears that negotiations with one of Chelsea’s top midfield targets have broken down. Chelsea’s midfield options remain limited.
According to Football Insider, the Blues and Brighton and Hove Albion are no longer negotiating a transfer for Moises Caicedo.

Caicedo negotiations between Chelsea and Brighton have broken down.
The two clubs had been in negotiations for the Ecuadorian international, but according to the report, discussions have ceased after Brighton rejected a second offer for the player.
Caicedo, age 21, joined Brighton in 2021 and was promoted to the first team in the middle of the 2021/22 campaign.
The midfielder has made a total of 53 appearances for the south coast club across all competitions, and he excelled as Roberto De Zerbi’s side qualified for the Europa League for the first time last season.
According to reports, the Ecuadorian has already agreed to personal terms with Chelsea, but the proposed transfer appears to be in jeopardy.
Brighton maintains its valuation of the midfielder at £100 million and has therefore rejected Chelsea’s second offer, believed to be worth £80 million.
Caicedo was a transfer target for Arsenal in January, but a deal never materialized, and the player signed a new long-term contract with his current club shortly thereafter.
