Chelsea plans to sign a £110 million striker despite warnings from Graham Potter about Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea plot £110million striker signing despite Graham Potter’s Romelu Lukaku warning
As with Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea are prepared to break their transfer record again in the summer to acquire a striker, despite Graham Potter’s warning that a new forward does not guarantee goals.
Since acquiring control of the west London club last summer, the new owners have spent over £600 million and embarked on the largest January spending spree in history.
Nine players were brought in, including a mixture of wonderkids, big-money signings – most notably the Premier League record £106m arrival of Enzo Fernandez on the final day of the transfer window – and an expensive loan deal for Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.
Chelsea intends to continue investing during the summer and has prioritized acquiring a new forward.

The Blues may have already agreed to terms with RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku, but they are also interested in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian international, who is also desired by Manchester United, is Serie A’s leading scorer with 14 goals in just 16 appearances, but he will command a massive transfer fee, with The Sun reporting that Chelsea will need to spend more than £110 million to sign him – breaking their record once again.
However, the rumored interest in Osimhen raises doubts about how in sync Chelsea’s hierarchy is with their manager, given Potter’s caution about throwing more money at the club’s difficulties.
Since assuming command, Chelsea have struggled greatly to convert chances into goals, and that trend continued on Friday night against west London rivals Fulham in a scoreless draw.
After the game, Potter mentioned Lukaku’s catastrophic move to Stamford Bridge, when he was loaned back to Inter after only one season, and stated that acquiring another high-priced forward is not necessarily the solution to Chelsea’s goal drought.
I believe we must progress as a team. ‘If you look back 18 months, Chelsea wasn’t scoring and they believed that spending close to £100 million on a center forward [Lukaku] would solve all their problems, but it didn’t,’ he claimed.
Our challenge is to attack more effectively as a team; this is what we need to do.
Lukaku would appear to serve as a cautionary tale for Chelsea in their pursuit of Osimhen, as the Belgian scored prolifically in Italy before returning to the Premier League in a club-record transfer.
He scored 24 goals and dished out 11 assists for title-winning Inter in the 2020/21 season, a significant contribution every 82 minutes. However, he scored only eight goals in the Premier League before being shipped back to Milan, where he has been plagued by injuries.
