Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag remains silent on Mason Greenwood’s future following the dismissal of charges.
Erik ten Hag addressed Mason Greenwood’s situation at Manchester United following the dismissal of accusations against the striker.
After the allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control against first team striker Mason Greenwood were dropped on Thursday, Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag refused to comment on the attacker’s future. The future of the 21-year-old at the club is uncertain after the announcement by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Greenwood is unable to practice or play for United while the club conducts its own internal investigation, despite the fact that the CPS has dropped all criminal charges. Since he was caught and charged in January of last year, United has suspended him for the past 12 months.
Ten Hag addressed the matter in his news conference prior to Manchester United’s match against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday, although the Dutchman refrained from expressing an opinion on whether the England international would return to the club.
“I can’t add anything. I refer to the statement of the club,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday. “In this moment, I can’t give comment about the process. I can’t say anything about it, I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment, I can’t add anything.”
Greenwood was arrested almost a year ago when Ten Hag, who was hired in June of last year, was not in charge of the club. His predecessor at the time, Ralf Rangnick, faced questions from the press.

Greenwood was charged with one crime of controlling and coercive behavior, one count of attempted rape, and one count of physical injury. All three accusations against the same lady were dismissed after the withdrawal of a key witness.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) asserted that the case had to be halted due to the witness’ withdrawal and the discovery of ‘new material,’ adding, “There is no realistic chance of conviction.”
Several hours later, United issued their own statement, which read: “Manchester United acknowledges the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to withdraw all charges against Mason Greenwood. Before choosing its next moves, the club will follow its own procedure.
Greenwood made a brief statement on Thursday evening, which read: “I am relieved that this matter is now resolved, and I would want to thank my family, friends, and loved ones for their support. No additional remark will be made at this time.”
Greenwood was accused of “repeatedly participating” in coercive behavior during a four-year period. He last appeared in court in November, when a trial date of November 23 was set. After being caught at his house in January, he was detained for three nights.
United chose to suspend him, although he has continued to receive his weekly salary of £75,000. His name also remains on United’s Premier League roster for the remainder of the season. He is listed as a player under age 21.
Greenwood scored 35 goals in 129 games for United, earning him a single England cap in 2020 prior to his arrest.
