Manchester United Confirms Greenwood’s Presence in Premier League Squad

Even though all attempted rape and assault accusations against him have been dismissed.

Mason Greenwood remains on Manchester United’s roster despite the fact that all attempted rape and assault accusations against him have been dropped.

Greenwood’s name remains on the first-team squad page on United’s official website, which might be an indication that the 21-year-old will restart his football career.

Despite being suspended by the club, Greenwood was named to United’s official Premier League squad list as an under-21 player at the start of the season.

In October 2022, the England international was accused with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily damage. All three charges were filed against the same woman.

On Thursday afternoon, a decision was reached to terminate prosecution after ‘the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light’, the Crown Prosecution Service stated.

Greenwood, who has 35 goals in 129 games for United since his debut in March 2019, was suspended by the club on January 30, last year, immediately after his detention by Greater Manchester Police.

What’s Trending

His last game for United was a 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham on January 22 of last year, with his last goal coming three days earlier in a 3-1 win against Brentford. Greenwood’s No. 11 jersey number has not been reassigned.

His only debut for England will be against Iceland in September 2020.

‘We have a duty to maintain cases under constant review,’ said a CPS spokesperson.

‘In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

‘ We have explained our decision to all parties.

‘We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.’

The charges Greenwood was facing – from November 2018 to October 2021 – all related to the same woman.

He appeared before Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court in November, wearing a dark suit and a hoodie and accompanied by family members.

He took off his sweatshirt before entering the dock to confirm his identity and age for the five-minute session, but he did not make a plea.

At the time, prosecutor Jason Pitter KC admitted that the case needed ‘careful examination’ before proceeding.

‘Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this,’ said Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection today.

‘The investigation team has stayed in constant contact with the legal team, offering any changes of significance, and therefore appreciate the rationale for the suspension of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

‘Despite the public and media interest in this case, we have decided not to comment more.

‘However, I’d like to use this opportunity to restate GMP‘s commitment to investigating claims of violence against women and girls and supporting individuals affected, regardless of their circumstances, during what can be a difficult and traumatic period for them.

A growing number of officers are obtaining specialized training, and the police is more routinely utilizing instruments provided via the criminal justice system to keep people safe and victims cared for.

‘If you believe you are or may be a victim, please do not allow this instance discourage you from seeking help.’
