Alvarez has been unfortunate not to start more matches for Manchester City this season\sManchester City striker Julian Alvarez has revealed that he was shocked by how much Pep Guardiola changes his players for matches.

Alvarez is in his first full season at City since his transfer from River Plate on the final day of the 2017 transfer window. The Argentine World Cup champion has scored nine goals in 26 appearances for the Blues thus far.

Alvarez said to GQ magazine during the unveiling of the Speedportal boots by Adidas: “Before I arrived, I was familiar with Pep’s management style, but I was astonished by the amount of player turnover. Pep virtually never selects the same eleven for consecutive games, so you must always be awake and at 100 percent so that when your time comes, you are prepared to perform and at the manager’s disposal.

“After the World Cup, I had a few days to celebrate and spend time with my family and friends. As soon as it was time to come back to the club, I changed my focus.

“In terms of what I want to achieve this season, I want to be at 100 per cent and play as many games as possible, helping in any way I can. Collectively, we want to win every competition that we’re in.”

City resumes Premier League play on Sunday when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur. Guardiola’s squad sits second in the competition, five points behind Arsenal in first place.
