Starting next year, all teachers will be required to undergo a new training course. This training initiative, if accepted by President William Ruto based on the advisory panel’s recommendations, aims to ensure that instructors are up-to-date with the changes in the school curriculum.
The advisory panel has emphasized the importance of retraining all teachers on the curriculum revisions. The report containing these recommendations is set to be presented to the President at the State House on August 1st, 2023. It is estimated that this training will span an entire year.
The panel has also suggested that the Ministry of Education should develop guidelines for mandatory one-year retooling and upgrading programs for teachers who graduated before 2023 to align with the curriculum changes.
To implement this retooling program, educational institutions will need to establish comprehensive Faculty Staff programs in preparation for competency-based teacher education.
Additionally, the task committee has recommended that a minimum grade of C (simple) be set for applicants to pre-service teacher education. This measure aims to increase both the quantity and quality of new teachers entering the field.

Furthermore, the committee has proposed that a C (simple) grade, along with a diploma in special needs education, a diploma in technical teacher education, or a diploma in secondary teacher education, should be prerequisites for aspiring educators.
While university senates will retain the authority to determine admission criteria for programs leading to a Bachelor of Education degree, upon completing pre-service training, the Teachers Service Commission will offer all education graduates the opportunity to participate in a mandatory one-year internship program.
