2024 Updated Fees Structure For Secondary Schools

Parents to Pay Over Sh20,000 additional fees 2024/2025

Parents have been hit hard with distressing news on the eve of the 2024 academic year school reopening. This development follows the government’s decision to discontinue free secondary education, a move that has garnered significant attention in the media and left people pondering the implications of the newly proposed fees.

According to reports, the government has altered its funding model for university education this year, creating financial challenges for students who cannot afford the soaring fees, especially in public universities. The funding model lacks consistency, with the government only providing partial support to financially disadvantaged students. This shift in funding has also extended to secondary schools, with the government introducing a revised school fees structure.

For instance, students in national schools, who were previously paying an annual fee of Sh 55,554, will now face an increase of Sh 19,628, bringing the total to Sh 73,182. Similarly, extra county schools have raised their school fees by Sh 25,488, up from the previous Sh 40,000, resulting in a total fee of Sh 66,023.

In addition, day schools have introduced a fee of Sh 5,372, while government funding remains at Sh 22,244. Given the current high cost of living, these adjustments are poised to render education in Kenya increasingly unaffordable for a significant number of students, much like the situation in universities, where some students are still unable to secure admission due to outstanding balances.
