2022 KCSE students to take HELB Exam before funding
Charles Ringera, the CEO of HELB, has declared that applicants for financial aid from the school must pass an exam first.
The purpose of this test is to categorise pupils and inform them of the terms and conditions of the funding in order to determine how much money will be given out in loans and scholarships.
Students must receive a minimum exam score of 80% in order to qualify for HELB financing.
“The test aims to create an awareness that this is a loan and scholarship and details the payments you will have to make depending on the classification that you are in,” he said.
The assessments will also be directed at current students who are still receiving support under the previous funding regime.

Admission of first-year university students
On August 23, 2022, first-year students at Laikipia University will be admitted.
Instances where students had trouble understanding loan provisions, such the one-year grace period for loan payback, are addressed in the test, according to Ringera.
The CEO made it clear that the purpose of the grace period is to support students as they adjust to life after graduation and begin to establish themselves.
Ringera emphasised the importance of loan repayments by pointing out that 33% of the board’s budget is made up of loan repayments. He therefore advised loan recipients to fulfil their commitments.
Ringera urged Kenyans to seize unofficial job chances since they might help those looking for employment outside of the regular system.
HELB has opened its online application platform for students enrolling in colleges and universities who are looking for government scholarships, loans, and bursaries.
Ringera highlighted that the application deadline for students seeking government financing will conclude on August 27, 2023.
HELB received Sh30 billion in the budget for the 2023–24 fiscal year, an increase from Sh15.8 billion in the previous fiscal year.
